unpaid leave refused

I asked for an unpaid leave of absence for 6 months to help my learning disabled child with the transition between high school and adulthood. It was refused based on the supervisors concern it wasn't best for our clients. The problem is that similar leaves have been granted for reasons such as maternity and needing time off.

Response from Carl: Based on what you mention I'm guessing you weren't given a reasonable (or any) answer as to why you weren't allowed to take the time off while others were?

Depending on where you live maternity leave is probably something covered by your local laws whereas upaid leave for the reason you mention might be one that is up to the discretion of the individual manager.
