Resigning during the three month probation period

Hello there,

If I resign my position with a company during my three month probation period am I required to give notice? Given if it was going the other way and the employer was terminating the employement I'm sure there wouldn't be a period of waiting before being shown the door?

Your comments please and thank you.

Don

RESPONSE FROM CARL: Thanks for your question, Don. If you need to leave the job quickly (ie. you have another job to go to) or if you simply want to leave the company quickly (ie. you just don't want to be there anymore) your best bet might be to bring up the subject of your last day at work with your boss when you are resigning. I've resigned from several jobs where I finished the same day I resigned. That was the nature of the business in recruitment where I was working at the time. At the same time, I was once asked by my boss if I wanted to stay on board for a week or two to finish things up and I told him that I could wrap everything up quickly anyways and I finished the same day I resigned. You might be able to work out the same arrangement as I did, if you desire this.

Check over the contract or job offer that you signed with your employer and see what it says. Even in the first 3 months, you might still find that your employer requires - or would simply prefer - that you give them a period of notice (ie. 2 weeks). At this point, I'd suggest you want to leave the company without burning any bridges. You never know, you might end up working with or for the same people in the future.

Carl
