Resigning due to pregnancy

Comments from Carl: If you're pregnant, you might be considering leaving to go on maternity leave and not coming back. If that's the case you probably want to double check and ensure you are making the right decision by quitting now and not doing so before you're scheduled to go back from your maternity leave but if you're absolutely sure you don't want to go back to your job after your pregnancy and are ready to quit now here is a letter you can tailor for your own needs.

On a side note, unless you somehow have to resign now (I can't think of a reason offhand why you would have to do it now) you might want to delay resigning until shortly before you have to go back to work (ie. following maternity leave) just so you have enough time to think about it. Some mothers realize after giving birth that they actually miss work (and perhaps the income that goes with it) and look forward to going back to work even with reduced hours if that's available. Other mothers do decide that they've had enough and choose to resign.

Dear Jane

Please accept this letter as confirmation of my resignation from my position as Your Job Title Here with ABC Corporation.

As you are aware, I was planning on taking time off for my upcoming pregnancy but after careful consideration I have decided to devote my time to my family. Although I understand I can return to work after taking maternity leave I've instead decided against this and offer this letter to confirm my intentions.

I wish to leave on good terms and will do my best to finish up my work and to assist with a smooth transition before leaving.

I appreciate your understanding over the past few months and wish you and ABC Corporation the best in the future.

Sincerely
