Job Description Misrepresented

by Shelley
(Orlando FL)

When I was hired, the job was described as a Parts Expeditor - I would be calling customers when their parts were in, and scheduling the repair jobs. However, there are many more tasks that I have been assigned, from telephone receptionist, parts price quoter, general Customer Service Requests (and talking to upset, unhappy customers!). The training has been piecemeal. The computer program is very detailed - way over my experience. This is more like a Call Center job. I feel it was misrepresented. Any suggestions?

Response from Carl: Thanks Shelley. One thing you don't mention is how long you've been working in the job. If you've been there a few weeks, perhaps things will get better. Sometimes companies who are flying by the seat of their pants hire a new person with great intentions but the everyday things that arise cause them to lost the plot and instead bring that new person in to help work on other things unrelated to the job you were hired for.

If you've been there for months or longer and don't like what's happening, perhaps you can speak with the person who hired you and ensuring that you are able to speak directly and specifically about the job description that you were hired with, ask when you'll start doing those tasks instead.
