Job application deadline legalities

After applying for a job late in the process, but clearly before the deadline in the web posting, I spoke with the hiring manager in a follow-up call. I was informed that they were so far along in the process that a decision was imminent and I would not be considered, although I am highly qualified. Is this legal or are deadlines simply a guideline? Does every applicant who applies on time have the right to be considered seriously?

Response from Carl: I've never read any specifics related to whether or not the deadlines are in fact legal or simply guidelines but I'm inclined to believe they are in fact guidelines only and that the company can ignore them if they choose. There might be cases where a deadline is actually a bit more concrete - say for instance a government institution or perhaps a university or college where things might be a bit more formal. Why a company would choose to set a date and then ignore it though, is beyond me.

While you'd certainly hope that everyone who applies for a job will be considered seriously, this situation appears to be proof that this isn't always the case. I'm sure you've already figured this out but in the future try your best to ensure you apply for a job well before the deadline just to be safe.
