Entry Level Sales/Marketing
by Meredith
Response from Carl: Hi Meredith. When I was beginning my career I used to do the same thing you did above which was put "marketing/sales" as my desired job. I have since worked in both functions and can tell you that typically they're two separate functions. A sales person gets paid to sell while a marketing person will get paid to produce various marketing programs, often ones that will either be used directly or indirectly by people in sales. You will always find cases where a role might encompass both but for the most part, a sales role is very different from a marketing one. In that regard, I'd ensure that when you're applying for a particular job, you specifically focus on the job you're applying for. So if it's a sales job, you mention that it's a sales job you're looking for and then tie that into your public speaking experience in the sense that you're a confident person, can't communicate in front of others, etc. In recruitment when I saw people listing several job types as their desired job, I wondered if weren't really sure what they wanted to do. Perhaps for the purposes of this exercise you just wanted to mention that you are open to both roles so I understand that. For the purposes of applying for jobs though, you want to make sure the reader knows that you know exactly what type of job you want and more importantly, what you offer the employer. Carl |
