Demotion?

by Rose
(Woodbridge, Va)

After being a store manager for 18 years I was laid-off. When I got a new job it was with similar company as an assistant manager. I am still working there, but mostly was shown the store work that needed to be done, every time I come in for my shift. I had a designated sales - person that is supposed to be training me in the store. The woman is very loud, disrespectful and bellitled me every chance she gets, and the manager knows this.

The store is very dirty and disorganized, and every time I come in I try to get this fixed first, which takes a long time. I was shown once how to do computer and shift closings on the register/ which is completely different than my experience, and expected to do it from there, even without the ID given to get into computer.

Yesterday, after two months of "training" I was given the letter of demotion to shift supervisor instead and I was told that I don't meet expectations for assistant manager position and will not be allowed to continue to assistant manager.

I am a very hard worker, and can not stand a dirty and disorganized store. Should I be looking for another job?

Response from Carl: Thanks Rose. Sorry about your situation. Looking for a new job is certainly one option. Perhaps you could see if you can find another store manager role that might better utilize your skills and also better match your interests? Easier said than done I'm sure but perhaps this job isn't worth fighting for and a new start is what you need.

You'll obviously have to make that decision yourself but if you don't see a way to fix things at your current job, perhaps that's your best option. As it stands, from what you mention it seems that you are now two levels below where you were before as a store manager so I can see why looking for a new job has entered your head.
