find your dream career

Betrayed

by Lesley Harvey
(Glasgow)

My story of favouritism is this. I have been working for my employer for 3 years, I work hard, never go off sick and feel I contribute a lot to my team. The manager at my work got her sister in law a job at the same level as me, she started 5 months ago. Since she started she has been given all the opportunities that have come up in the office. Extra small jobs to look good when she goes for the managers position. Every time these small jobs come up I have applied, as well as a few of my other co workers who have also been there a long time. This girl applied for a managers job and failed the interview as she had not been there long enough however she was given the job anyway and is still taking all the small jobs that are going, stopping me from progressing in the office. I am so upset and I feel betrayed by my manager who is supporting her, even though my manager tells me I deserve the promotions more than her. I don't know what to do. Is this illegal? Can anyone help me? I'm scared to challenge anyone about it in case I get sacked but I'm at the point I can't hold my tongue anymore! I feel that all my hard work and efforts have been for nothing, I've poured my heart and soul into my job then someone who started 5months ago is considered worthy? She has no experience in the job, her stats are rubbish so she hasn't been given this because she is good at the job. Please help I'm going mad.

Response from Carl: Hi Lesley and sorry about the situation you're facing. I can't comment on the legalities of your situation since I'm unfamiliar with your local area and laws. Having said that I wonder if getting a legal opinion from a labour lawyer might help you if you feel it's worth it?

It seems that you are concerned about approaching your superiors so if this is the case perhaps a legal opinion might be your best bet to start with.

Carl
