Achieving Work Life Balance

Achieving work life balance often means doing things differently (ie. better) on both sides of the coin.

Having a work life balance means taking care of your personal life and understanding the impact a poor personal life can have on your career (and vice versa of course).

Here are some suggestions for achieving work life balance to help you ensure you properly manage your personal life and remain energetic and healthy.

1. Join a gym.

Or learn how to play squash, take up jogging, or do something else athletic that will keep your body in shape and keep you active. Not only can you help your body you can help your mind as well. If you have the ability to work out during the workday – perhaps at lunch – you can fit it into your schedule and help to break your workday up a little bit. Otherwise, try to make some time for exercise before or after work. You can’t underestimate the value of doing something athletic and its positive impact on your life and health.

2. Sign up for yoga classes.

I took yoga classes that were being offered in my building and found that it not only improved my flexibility, it was also very relaxing. If you are not into high-impact activities, yoga classes can help to relax you especially if you have a high-stress job or one that requires you to sit for long periods of time. Yoga can help to loosen up your muscles and improve your overall health naturally.

3. Get more involved in your community.

Look for opportunities to get involved in neighborhood activities. Find a community center and join one of their classes. If you live in a condo, take advantage of programs or classes that are offered. I live in a condo and try to take advantage of all the things they offer inside my building (yoga classes being one of them) that I’d otherwise have to go out to attend if I lived in a house.

4. Learn a second (or third) language.

Not only can learning a second or third language pay dividends in your work life if you ever find yourself applying for a job that requires a bilingual candidate, it helps to keep your mind fresh. Continual learning benefits both your work and personal life no matter what it is that you’re learning.

5. Donate your time to a charity.

There are plenty of charities and non-profit organizations that need your help. Giving your time not only helps others, it can provide you with some personal benefits as well as you see your work benefiting those who don’t have as much as you do.

Each of these suggestions can go a long way in achieving work life balance and you might just find that an improvement on one side of your life benefits the other, too.
